How to Spot a Truly Kind Person

How do you know if someone is truly kind — when you first meet them?

Calm isn’t kindness

You might think — look for someone calm. Quiet. Someone who doesn’t argue, always steps back, never pushes.

But that’s not kindness.

That might just be insecurity. Indecision. Someone who simply doesn’t know what to say.

The stray-dog test

Okay — watch how they treat people with less power. A delivery guy. A stray dog on the street.

Better signal. But still not reliable.

Maybe they just had a bad experience with dogs as a kid. Maybe they’re nervous around strangers. Maybe it’s just awkward social wiring — not a cold heart.

The face test

And then there’s the face.

By 30, your default way of moving through the world starts showing up in your features. The lines. The eyes. The default expression when nothing is happening.

But even that lies.

Someone can spend 29 years closed off and self-serving — and then one loss, one moment, one conversation — completely rewires them. And they spend the next year giving everything they have.

So how do you know?

Honestly — you almost can’t.

People have learned to perform kindness. First impressions are a skill now.

That’s exactly why we started building Merit Score — a kindness index that makes good intentions a little harder to fake.

Merit — a community where we make kindness cool.

Merit is an app where kind people help each other — and earn real-life rewards for doing good deeds.
